Six Sentence Sunday #17: One Wicked Night

It’s a beautiful Sunday downunder, and I may have my aching tooth under control finally. (Touching every piece of wood I can find)  This week I’m turning back time to my first published short story, One Wicked Night. One Wicked Night is the story of a heartbroken man who accepts an courtesan’s invitation to join her one night and gets way more than he bargained for. This is from the chapter one. Enjoy!

Time stood still as he gazed at the bejeweled impure.

Rumors and innuendo did not do her justice. She glided toward him with sleek, dark-haired perfection. Benedict noticed the challenge in her eyes, as if she expected something from him instead of the other way around. The second, and not the least important, her gown floated in transparent drifts about her. He could see the delicate turn of her leg and the dipping curve of her waist as she passed before candlelight.

One Wicked Night

Benedict Abernathy, an untitled but wealthy gentleman visiting London, is heartily sick of his celibate existence. Determined to leave his shattered heart behind and move on with his life, he accepts an invitation for a night of debauchery in the arms of London’s infamous courtesan, Lottie Townsend.

Lady Charlotte Goodchild has fallen far from privilege and longs for one night of pleasure with the man she loves. But Benedict must be spared the truth of her ruin at all costs. Posing as Lottie Townsend, a notoriously discriminating courtesan and old friend, she hides her identity and invites Benedict to share the night of passion that fate denied them.

Six Sentence Sunday #16: Forsaking the Prize

Another lovely Sunday has rolled around. Where has the week gone? I’m continuing with snippets from my current WIP, Forsaking the Prize. This is another example of how utterly problematic Tobias Randall is for Blythe’s peace of mind.

The door swung fully open. “You can’t leave until your name is cleared. Neither can I, for that matter,” Tobias Randall added cheerfully.

Blythe glanced at him and looked away quickly, fighting to keep a blush from her cheeks. Tobias Randall had come to add his tuppence worth to the discussion but was only dressed in a sheet. How typical of his type of man.

Six Sentence Sunday #15: Forsaking the Prize

Happy Six Sentence Sunday! More from my current WIP. Life aboard ship isn’t at all refined, as evidenced by Tobia’s ruminations on what having sex with the heroine would be like. I wish I could post more but we’ve gotta keep with the SixSunday guidelines.

His head tilted to the side and his gaze raked her. “Not mad,” he whispered. “Just very, very, unfriendly. Don’t worry, B. I’m not drunk enough to bed you without causing myself considerable pain. My rudder would likely suffer injury should I dare to dock at your port. Splinters, you know.”

Six Sentence Sunday #14: Forsaking the Prize

Happy Six Sentence Sunday! My current WIP is coming along nicely and since my crit partners liked this part so well, I’m going to share part of the first conversation between my hero and heroine. Bear in mind he is just home from the sea and that experience has colored his language quite a bit. He’s not remotely close to being a gentleman. Such fun!

Blythe set her hands to her hips. “Let me make one thing clear to you, Mr. Randall. Your glib tongue won’t work with me. I think you an utter scoundrel. A man not to be trusted and if you were not so abnormally sized, and I a lady, I would have you thrown head first from the window.”

“Abnormally sized? Lady Venables, have you been peeking at my rudder?”

Six Sentence Sunday #13: Forsaking the Prize

Wow. 2012 is flying by. So hard to believe we’re already in March. Another post for six sentence sunday (along with the other 100+ authors participating in this weekly event). This week I’m offering up something really fresh, as in something written very recently. I’m in the early stages of writing Forsaking the Prize and thought I’d share this small sample of my wip. This is Tobias’ first night at Romsey Abbey and he’s just decided to take a grand tour with Eamon Murphy as his guide.

“I’m not as well versed as I’d like to be about the abbey,” Murphy mumbled.

Tobias set his hand to his ear. “Speak up man, cannon fire has ruined my hearing. Did you just say your nurse lives at the abbey?”

Murphy gave him a flat, hostile stare. “I really didn’t miss you.”

Six Sentence Sunday #12: Engaging the Enemy

This will be my final six sentence sunday from Engaging the Enemy. As much fun as posting is, its slowing down my writing of new material. I must get stuck into the next book, Forsaking the Prize. The next hero is bugging me. Enjoy!

She ran her hand over the silk of her gown, thinking of Leopold Randall’s visit. “He is handsome, don’t you think?”

Blythe fussed with the folds of her gown, heightening her appearance of prim respectability. “I hardly think a duchess should notice those things about men.”

Oh, Mercy noticed. Yet she’d never met a man to put such thoughts into her head so quickly.
