Bad luck, the ton said, ran in his family. Unfortunately, the fathers of heiresses believed that to be the case, too, and spread the word among themselves to keep their daughters at a distance from him.

Simon pressed his best hat tighter on his head, then kicked a stone with the scuffed toe of his boot as he stumbled along Bond Street toward his current home—a place far from the spacious townhouse he’d previously occupied. A walnut and ivory writing desk and two large trunks, that he’d brought back from his grand tour, were all that remained of his previous life as a gentleman of distinguished society. Life at Cavello House—a place that sounded a lot grander than it really was—was simple. It kept the weather off him, and that was as far as he dared hope these days.
